A family business in Langley Park is booming after setting up shop in a disused County Durham chapel in August.
Taylored Fit Physio moved into the chapel at Front Street that had been empty for two years. Husband-and-wife-team Vicky and Mark Smith brought it back to life with a £250,000 revamp.
Their new centre not only hosts their own business, but is also providing a space for other therapists.
Vicky, who has been a physiotherapist with the NHS and the corporate world for 25 years, said: “The renovation was a much bigger job than we’d planned as the chapel really needed a lot of work.
“But we thought it was such a fantastic building with so much space, and we love Langley Park, so we thought it would be a real boost to the community to open our business there.”
Husband Mark has also been a physio for many years, having worked in North East hospitals with local sports teams and in the private sector.
The couple, who live in Durham, set up Taylored Fit Physio four years ago and had been looking for a site for their business for a while when they spotted the chapel.
The couple won funding for their grand design from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
Mark added: “That made a big difference to the project.
“When we bought the chapel, it still had its original vestry and pulpit, so we’ve preserved the spirit of the old building while giving it a much more contemporary twist.”
Since moving to the chapel, Vicky and Mark have expanded their team and bolstered their service offering.
Vicky said: “On Christmas Day, we’ll have been open six months and have grown to a team of 17 including two receptionists.
“Physio and physio-led pilates are proving to be our most popular services with an increasing demand for sports massage.”
From January, Taylored Fit will be offering more classes and courses including aerial yoga, baby massage and additional pilates classes including post-natal pilates.
Vicky added: “We would never have imagined that month on month we would get busier and busier as we are, it’s a fantastic end to a great year.”
